I Want to…But, not sure where to start.

So you’re really passionate about something and you want to start a podcast. The idea seems simple, but the more you research the scarier it looks. Trust us, it is not as difficult as Google search makes it! If it makes you feel any better, we started with an iPhone and the most basic software (free). Yes, it didn’t sound the best. Yes, we found some bumps in the road. And, yes, we have definitely evolved and grown exponentially…because we were passionate enough to keep on trucking!

If you are wanting to start a podcast so you can be the next Joe Rogan and make tons of money…go ahead and reexamine your purpose. If you are wanting to start a podcast because you are passionate about your subject and want to explore it on another level…then please keep reading this blog!

The following are the basics that you must have in order before worrying about equipment:

  1. Podcast Name - be creative and make sure that the name is not already taken. The name of your podcast is the root of how you will promote it. It will inspire a logo, which will be on every podcast platform that you can think of! The name will be on google searches and will need to help listeners dial in on your idea and the subject matter of your podcast.

  2. Podcast Logo - logos can be simple or intricate. This is a fun part, because the name of your podcast will make clear of what your logo is. We have used Fiverr for all of our logos and honestly paid about $10-$25 for our logos. It is completely up to you! (Please Note: your logo must meet the size requirements of 3000x3000 in order to be approved by Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Play)

  3. Find a Podcast Host - What is that? Every podcast must have a hosting site. There are many options out there, and yes…it will cost you. We pay about $108/year per podcast that we produce with Podbean. What are you paying for? A podcast host is a place to store and distribute your podcast's audio files. They provide a podcast RSS feed (basically a listing of all your episodes) that you will submit to Apple Podcasts and other podcast directories. There are many other podcast hosts, the Top 7 in 2020 are Buzzsprout, Captivate, Transistor, Castos, Podbean, Simplecast, and Resonate.

  4. Record 1 Episode - but why? I thought you were going to tell me how to submit my podcast to Apple or Spotify??? Unfortunately, in order to submit your podcast “For Review” to those platforms…there must be at least one episode attached to your RSS Feed. (See next blog post about Recording your first episode)

  5. After Recording Episode 1 - Now is the time to copy your RSS Feed and submit it to Apple Podcasts and Spotify. We recommend doing those platforms first since they are the popular platforms and the most difficult.
